Tipping
Hello,
We are staying at the hoilday village arriving 22nd may for two weeks. We are a friendly family with 3 small children. We were just wondering about tipping and what is a good amount to tip?
Thanks Helen.

Hi Helen
So glad you asked this question ! Looking forward to seeing the replies. I had heard that porters take your bags to your room and I too wondered how much to tip and in what currency.

Re: Tipping
This is rather a difficult one .
Everyone would like to give much as possible . however This is not the case everytime . 2 pounds for a porter is not bad . However if you wish to put a smile on his face i would suggest you need to start from 4 pounds ( 10 Turkish Lira ) ...
In the end , depents who serves you most , who makes your day ,makes you feel special should get a good tip ...
What really puts me off is , some amigos get all day a great service, big smile all day , get treated like king despite theirs missuruble (what a spelling) face all day , all what they give in the end is just a handshake and Tanks Mate ...Sorry, but just a handshake and thanks mate is NOT enough ..
One day we went on a Excursion , the tour guide called Adnan I belive his name was , this lad took care of everything , including babysitting , information ,and we had a smashing day ...He got 1 pound in Total from the entire group ..we were the last once in bus to be dropped off at Alinn Hotel , I felt soo upset ...Anyway , to cut the story short , if you believe you have been served well , then make his/her day ..
this how i think anyway

sorry for the mistakes above as i am use to short hand writing

When in the holiday village in 2006 We did give the porter 10 lira for dropping of suitcases, we spoke to one family who offered a porter two £1 coins for his troubles only for the porter to say I dont take coins, notes only, CHEEKY or what!!. We also tipped the tour rep from Sarigermetours 10 lira for his great work he did during the 12 island bot trip, Then on our last day we gave one of the cleaners who walks round all day and night sweeping and mopping up all the spilt food and drink from the snack bar area (tropical side) this guy would always smile and give you a small nod of the head when we seen him , we thought he put up with some very messy guests who on purpose would just drop things on the ground, 20 lira was given to him , only for me to overhear another guest say to her hubby, look that guy has just given that cleaner money !! whats all that about?... only for me to turn and give her a glaring stare. This guy totaly deserved to know he was doing a great job. We would also put any spare coins ( £ + lira) into the tip box at the pool bar and staight away we started getting good service with a smile from the bar staff , which was handy when the bar was busy , they would see you straight away hehe no waiting!!.
We thoght at the very least a 10 lira tip was enough for a drink or 2 , roughly the same as we would tip back home.
Like kedoo says if you think you have received good service, then why not tip.
Cheers gink

We just spent a week at the Alinn and having had time to get to know a number of the staff we learnt that on average they earn 600 lira per month. As they can sometimes work up to 15 hours per day and always seem to smile (probably because Alinn is adults only) we left a hefty tip at the end of our week. When you consider they are serving you 3 times at day plus all your drinks I don't think £60 for a week in tips is to much. We also left the chambermaid a tip in the room as the room was always cleaned to perfection. At the end of the day, if you have good service where ever you go, it is nice to leave at least 10%
Re: Tipping
I think it's fair to reward good service and also think you get a better service in return.
Re: Tipping
These turkish people work long hours for very little money, and whatever tips they get helps to keep their families. Remember they often only work for the summer season and don't earn at all in the winter months. Even the young folk have to help to keep their families, so if you do get good service, please give a tip, it is very thankfully received in most cases.

Regarding tipping, I have found that i usually tip the bar staff on the START of the holiday, why wait until your last day and treat the staff that served you well, suss out on the first day, and treat them on the second. I then get spotted even quicker at the bar, also the cleaner get treated, better towels, bedding etc
